Exposes students to some of the skills of counseling and enables them to develop an understanding of the elementary principles of counseling theory as well as a better understanding of themselves in relation to other people.     Provides a specialized supervised field experience for individuals preparing for careers in counseling, student affairs, and related careers in the helping professions. One hundred twenty (120) clock hours of involvement must be accumulated for each credit hour earned. A maximum of 5 credit hours may be taken in any term. Consent of site supervisor is required. Prerequisite: Graduate standing, CNSL 5310, 5320, and consent of designated field setting authority.

    Provides a specialized supervised experience for individuals interested in gaining increased competence in working with couples and families. Students conduct supervised sessions with clients in a laboratory setting. Individual and group supervision is provided. Prerequisite: CNSL 5320 and CNSL 5200 and consent of MFT coordinator. Preferred courses include CNSL 5300, CNSL 5400 and CNSL 5500.

Emphasizes the role of a modern day personnel worker and relationships to the entire academic endeavor. Dual listed with CNSL 4620.     This capstone course helps prepare students to understand and work with clients around trauma issues in mental health and school settings. Previous learning will be reviewed and synthesized with knowledge about trauma-informed care across the lifespan, including psychological first aid. Research-based best practices, counselor wellness, and effective service delivery are emphasized. Prerequisite: graduate standing.

    Introduction to the etiology, prevention, and treatment of mental and emotional disorders. Includes a focus on the skills of biopsychosocial case conceptualization and treatment planning, and multi-axial differential diagnosis using the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Also addresses basic classifications, indications and contraindications of common pharmacological interventions. Prerequisites: program consent.

    Designed to increase understanding of major counseling theories, with an emphasis on the integration of theoretical and philosophical assumptions with personal viewpoints. Prerequisites: previous or concurrent enrollment in CNSL 4520/5520 or equivalent, admission to counseling program, consent of instructor.

    Designed to stimulate in-depth examination and research into existing counseling theories essential to developing a personal theoretical orientation to counseling. Prerequisite: advanced graduate standing.

    Offered only through college extension services. It is flexible and is utilized to meet local needs in the state. Credit in this course is not applicable toward advanced degrees in counseling. Prerequisites: graduate standing, permission of instructor and program director.
